A lovely scarce limited edition of Herbert Read's exploration of the history of English stained glass, complete with colourful plates and signed by Read to the limitation page. A scarce signed limited edition, limited to only fifty copies printed on handmade paper, of which this is number sixteen.Signed by the author to the limitation page.In the original slipcase, which is in a good condition.A beautiful record and appreciation of stained glass painting in English history.In this extensive volume, Herbert Read correlates the history of English stained glass with the history of art in general, and to trace its development as a mode of aesthetic expression.Read was an English art historian notable for co-founding the Institute of Contemporary Arts.Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, seven colour plates, sixty-two monochrome plates, and in-text engravings throughout.Collated, complete. In the original full vellum binding. Externally, smart. Minor bumping to the extremities. Spine is very lightly faded. A couple of small marks to the rear board and to the spine. Boards have sprung a little. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Slipcase is worn with cracks, fraying, and rubbing to the extremities. Paper to the boards and spine is lightly age-toned with a few minor marks, and chips to the margins, particularly to the head and tail of the spine. Cockling to the tail and joint of the rear board.
