Born in Newburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, he was raised by his mother and grandparents after his father left the family. At the age of 15, McBey began working as a bank clerk at the North of Scotland Bank in Aberdeen. Despite his banking career, he nurtured a passion for art, teaching himself etching techniques after discovering a book on the subject in the local library. Using a converted domestic mangle as a printing press, McBey produced his first etchings in 1902. His early works garnered local attention, and by 1910, he decided to pursue art full-time. Traveling to the Netherlands, he studied the works of Rembrandt, whose influence is evident in McBey's use of light and shadow. His first solo exhibition in London in 1911 was a success, establishing him as a significant figure in the art world. His etchings often depicted landscapes, maritime scenes, and everyday life, noted for their technical skill and atmospheric depth. During World War I, McBey was commissioned as an official war artist for the British Army in the Middle East. Attached to the Egyptian Expeditionary Force under General Edmund Allenby, he documented military operations and the landscapes of Palestine and Egypt from 1917 to 1918. These wartime experiences profoundly influenced his later work, infusing it with realism and historical context. After the war, McBey traveled extensively, visiting Spain, Morocco, and the United States. In 1929, he married Marguerite Loeb, an American photographer known professionally as Marguerite McBey. The couple settled in Tangier, Morocco, where the vibrant culture and scenery inspired much of his later artwork. His pieces from this period capture the essence of North African life, featuring local landscapes and figures. McBey's work was exhibited internationally, and he received numerous accolades throughout his career. He was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and was honored with a retrospective at the Aberdeen Art Gallery in 1937. His artworks are included in major collections such as the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the National Gallery of Scotland. James McBey passed away on 1 December 1959 in Tangier. He is remembered as one of Scotland's most important artists, whose self-taught mastery of etching and evocative depictions of early 20th-century life left a lasting impact on the art world. His legacy endures through his contributions to printmaking and the enduring appeal of his atmospheric and culturally rich artworks. ; 29 x 24 x 2.5 cms; viii, 32 & plates pages Original decorated gilt blindstamped cloth.
