Beschreibung
EXCUSE IT, PLEASE!, written by Cornelia Otis Skinner, illustrated by Otto Soglow, hardcover (no dust jacket), 1936. The reason I have marked this copy ?signed? is that tipped in on the first free endpaper is a small envelope containing a 2-page letter from Cornelia Otis Skinner to the original owner of the book (Amy Freeman). In the letter Skinner discusses the book?s opening essay on horse shows and her husband and son. Ms. Freeman was a devoted ?horsewoman? in San Antonio, Texas but apparently enjoyed Ms. Skinner?s sarcastic wit. BOOK CONDITION: good. The text block is in fine condition with no dog-ears, tears, or marks. Pages are age-toned. Besides the letter and envelope (postmarked October 24, 1936), there are a bookplate and a magazine photo of Cornelia Otis Skinner tipped in. The stitching is beginning to show through a moderate crack by the title page. Deckled edges. This is not a library book nor remainder. The gray and red cloth boards are in fair condition (bumped corners, spine bumping top and bottom, faded and spotted spine, discoloring of front and back covers). 8 ½ x 5 1/2, 225 pages, 16 ounces. NOTE THAT SINCE THE BOOK WEIGHS ONE POUND, THERE MAY BE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING CHARGES IF YOU REQUIRE PRIORITY MAIL OR LIVE OUTSIDE THE U.S. XX [From Wikipedia] Cornelia Otis Skinner (May 30, 1899 ? July 9, 1979) was an American author and actress. After attending the all-girls' Baldwin School and Bryn Mawr College (1918?1919) and studying theatre at the Sorbonne in Paris, she began her career on the stage in 1921. She appeared in several plays before embarking on a tour of the United States from 1926 to 1929 in a one-woman performance of short character sketches she herself wrote. She wrote numerous short humorous pieces for publications such as The New Yorker. These pieces were eventually compiled into a series of books, including Nuts in May, Dithers and Jitters, Excuse It Please!, and The Ape in Me, among others. [About the illustrator] Otto Soglow (December 23, 1900 ? April 3, 1975) was an American cartoonist best known for his comic strip The Little King. Born in Yorkville, Manhattan, Soglow grew up in New York City, where he held various jobs as a teenager and made an unsuccessful effort to become an actor. His first job was painting designs on baby rattles. While studying with John Sloan at the Art Students League of New York, his first cartoon was printed in 1919. Throughout the 1920s, his drawings were seen in numerous magazines. He illustrated more than 35 books, and did five books of his own, including Wasn't the Depression Terrible? (1934).
