The Jordan family started Wine-growing in the 18th century, Friedrich von Bassermann-Jordan (1872-1959) was the author of this seminal work on the history of winegrowing which was first published in 1907. He was a scientist and viticultural pioneer, becoming Supervisory Commissioner for the Palatinate Wine-growing Region(1910-1935) and President of the Bavarian Wine-growers' Association and Vice-president of the German Wine-growers Association. His portrait appears on the 'Friedrich v. Bassermann-Jordan Medal' which is bestowed on the most notable living persons who have achieved 'outstanding results for the German wine economy'.
