Welch, with the compliments of the author," on the front endpaper. ---- William Henry Welch, the noted physician, pathologist, and bacteriologist, founded the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, the first school of public health in the country. Welch served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War I, and received the Distinguished Service Medal.
