Stated Second Printing. William C. Schutz signed and inscribed this book to his colleague Louis Fierman who was an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University and the Medical Director of Elmcrest Psychiatric Institute in Portland, Connecticut (I have another book listed-- that is also an only signed copy-- by a Dr. Milton Erickson, also inscribed to Dr. Fierman). The inscription here is on the first front end paper. It reads 'To Lou, A fellow seeker after Joy. My best, Will Schutz.' It's dated '12-10-68, New Haven.' At the bottom of the signed page there is a little address label stating 'Louis B. Fierman, M.D., 210 Prospect Street, New Haven 11, Conn.' You can see the red covers in the photos. They are very clean. There's only a little bit of wear, light bump/creases at a few of the corners, and a little dent at the top edge of the front and the top edge of the rear. The book is decently bound from cover to cover. I didn't see any cracks or spaces between any of the facing pages. The covers are tight. The interior of the book is in very nice condition. I scrolled through the pages several times and found only two facing pages with a few small spots of soiling. I didn't see any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It's in quite solid shape. It has only some small spots of soiling. I've had the jacket in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book which goes back a good number of years. The protective cover tends to conceal imperfections. It looks like there's probably a couple of very small tears just off the top edge of the spine and rear cover. The flaps look very good, very clean, no wear. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. From the dust jacket: 'A leading group psychologist describes revolutionary new techniques for preserving one's identity amid the pressures of mass society. He demonstrates how, in special surroundings removed from everyday activities, one can develop a more integrated personality, deeper consciousness, and greater physical and psychic powers. Through group thinking, talking, touching, hugging, and acting out life-situations, one can transform suspicion into trust, hostility into love and dullness into awareness. Dr. Schutz has found that group seminars (encounter groups) help explore the close relationship between physical and emotional "tightness" and are effective in understanding and resolving sexual repressions and other psychological blocks.' A blurb from a George B. Leonard, VP, Esalen Institute, Big Sur, California: "Dr. William Schutz has performed the outrageous act of writing a straight-forward and practical handbook on how to be a better and more joyful human being. He has drawn upon a body of research and experience that might well constitute the most exciting-- and most inadequately reported-- direct action in psychology and education today. The methods he offers can help professionals and laymen alike. They work." William Schutz (1925--2002) was an American psychologist. He practiced at the Esalen Institute in the 1960s. He later became the president of BConWSA International. He received his Ph.D. from UCLA. In the 1950s, he was part of the peer-group at the University of Chicago's Counseling Center that included Carl Rogers, Thomas Gordon, Abraham Maslow and Elias Porter. He taught at Tufts University, Harvard University, University of California, Berkeley and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and was chairman of the holistic studies department at Antioch University until 1983.
