In French. 324 pages. As far as I can see, this book is not dated. The first edition was published in 1895. This book has the feel of being published around that time. The author, Paul Hervieu, signed and inscribed the half-title page. It reads: 'A Monsieur T. C. Young--Hommage (next word ??) de l'auteur, Paul Hervieu.' I've provided a photograph of the signed page. As you can see from the photos, the covers are quite beautiful. It is a half-binding. The cloth is a marbled pattern. The spine is very nice- looking with strong bands and bright gilt lettering. It has one light scratch between 'P.' and 'Hervieu.' The third band from the top contains the number '2' in gilt. That makes me think that this book may have been part of a set that included other of his plays. The second band has the author's name and the word 'Theatre'. The covers have only a few mild spots of soiling. There is a small chip in the leather just off the top edge of the front cover (see first photo). There's one other very small chip or spot of rub-through which is limited to the top edge of the rear cover. The edges are otherwise in very good condition. The corners are as well, with just very light rubbing. What stands out to me is the perfectly tight binding. The book is square ( the spine is not at all slanted) and very solidly bound from cover to cover, with nicely tight pages throughout. There are absolutely no binding issues of any kind. The top of the cloth at the spine is perfectly tight with the textblock. This is a very well-made book. The inside covers and first and last end papers are a swirling marbled pattern (see photo), quite beautiful to my eye and in perfect condition. There are also four blank front end papers (eight sides) and three blank rear end papers. While the pages are, as would be expected, toned, they're also exceptionally clean. In scrolling through I've haven't found even one instance of soiling. The pages are also in very good condition. They are not at all fragile, and I don't see any turned-down or placeholder corner creases. The book has a light green ribbon. There is one tiny label at the top left corner of the fourth blank front end paper. It has printed on it '7645'. Perhaps that has something to do with a private library. At the top corner of the blank verso of the illustrated first front end paper, in very tiny print (I needed a magnifying glass) are the words 'Brentano's Paris.' There are no other markings to be found anywhere in the book and there are no other attachments to be found anywhere in the book. Finally, with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. Despite everything the book has going for it, I've priced it quite conservatively. 'Paul Hervieu (2 September 1857 -25 October 1915) was a French novelist and playwright. After graduating in 1877, he first practiced in a law firm, in 1879 qualified for the diplomatic service, and was posted in the French Embassy in Mexico. But he preferred to remain in France, where he attended fashionable literary salons, and the acquaintance of artists and writers such as Marcel Proust, Paul Bourget, Henri Meilhac, Ludovic Halévy, Guy de Maupassant, Paul Verlaine, and Edgar Degas. He contributed novels, tales and essays to the chief Parisian papers and reviews, and published a series of novels, including L'Inconnue (1887), Flirt (1890), L'Exorcisée (1891), Peints par eux-mêmes (1893), and L'Armature (1895), dramatized in 1905 by Eugène Brieux. His Le Dédale (1903), dealing with the obstacles to the remarriage of a divorced woman, is reckoned among the masterpieces of the modern French stage.'. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 002819
