CHASE, Warren. THE LIFE-LINE OF THE LONE ONE; OR, THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE WORLD'S CHILD. Boston: Bela Marsh, 1858. 12mo., embossed brown cloth. Second Edition. In this book Chase recounts his socialist activities as espoused by Charles Fourier. Warren Chase [1813-1891] was one of the first apostles of Spiritualism in America and was a practioner of the "Free Love" movement in the early 19th century. Born in Pittsfield, New Hampshire, he began studying mesmerism in Wisconsin by 1843. He was also an active advoate of Charles Fourier's scheme of socialism. An end result was the founding in 1844 of the Wisconsin Phalanx- a socialist community in Fond-du-Lac County that disbanded, with a profit, six years later. Chase believed in utopian socialism, spiritualism, women's rights, and- scandalously at the time- free love. Chase eventually became a Wisconsin senator in 1848. The book gives further insights into his beliefs and differences with the beliefs of others around him. Signed presentation from Chase on the front endpaper: "Farris[?] & Charlotte Goodwin, Montpelier, Vt., With the best wishes of Author Warren Chase." Books signed by Chase are scarce. Good (some wear corners; bit of wear to spine edges & ends; little foxing text; neat repair to front hinge). $450.00. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 1202
