Lighthouse Point Florida: The First Fifty Years takes the reader back to a time before the city was created, when much of South Florida was little removed from an uninhabited wilderness, and only the hardiest pioneers ventured into the area to make for themselves new lives. The dramatic population boom in Broward County following the end of the Second World War set the stage for a number of developers and investors who looked at the famrland and mangrove swamps north of Pompano Beach and visualized a new community of beautiful houses set along miles of canals. The initial residents fought to keep that vision from being compromised, and fought to prevent being absorbed into nearby municipalities. Strong community support and legal wrangling led to incorporation in 1956. With the nearby Hillsboro Lighthouse casting its beam across the land, the name for the new city was an obvious choice - Lighthouse Point. The City of Lighthouse Point and its citizens have overcome the challenges and growing pains that changing times have brought. With a government that remained close to the residents, the community was able to decide for itself exactly what it wanted for its quality of life. An important factor in achieving those goals has been a strong and ongoing volunteer spirit.
