Beschreibung
Octavo, bound in full red pebbled morocco lettered in gilt, raised bands, top edge gilt. First edition, first printing. The volume was specially bound by the Marshalls for Philip C. Jessup, with his initials lettered on the spine; original wrappers bound in; custom made slipcase. A major presentation copy, inscribed: "For Philip C. Jessup, with admiration and best wishes - Katherine T. Marshall, Paris - 1948," beneath which her husband has signed his name, "George C. Marshall." ---- Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice, was credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. Jessup was a U.S. representative to the United Nations General Assembly, as well as a member of the International Court of Justice at The Hague. He also served as a U.S. ambassador at large from 1949 until his resignation in 1953. During that time, he was one of the closest advisers of then-Secretary of State Dean Acheson. After Jessup was maligned by Senator Joe McCarthy for purported communist "affinities," Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall rose to the diplomat's defense against McCarthy, who, in turn, demanded the General's dismissal from Truman's cabinet. Meanwhile, McCarthy's charges kept Jessup from being reappointed to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in 1951 but President Harry S. Truman made him an alternate delegate the following year. An extraordinary presentation copy, linking one of the era's most influential diplomats with the iconic soldier and statesman Marshall. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers ABE-16338497733
