"Per the publisher's request, this book is a choice compilation of my previous five books with additional items never shown in any of those books. We tried in this sixth book to cover a wide range of items being seen in the market place. From my first book published in 1976 to the fifth in 1992, there has been a vast change in the collecting of Occupied Japan. There were relatively few knowledgeable collectors around during the first edition, but by 1992, there were thousands. Now, in the new millennium, the expanding information about Occupied Japan collectibles has mushroomed across international boundaries with the introduction of the Internet into our lives. Few people owned computers in 1992, today, few people do not have access to one, even if the local library owns it! Not only has the Internet opened up information about collectibles, it has provided auctions where collectibles can change hands. This is good for collectors in that they have access to items they may never have seen before or otherwise had the opportunity to own. They can often find good bargains and fairly priced merchandise. The down side is that (as with any auction) prices can "get out of hand" quickly if two or more people are determined to own the same item! While this may be a dream come true for one seller, it may set an artificially high ceiling for the rest of the market, which ultimately discourages regular commerce for future buyers and sellers alike. Don't be led into believing ONE auction price is THE price of an item. IT was the price for that moment, under those circumstances. You could just as easily find a like item two weeks later selling for half that amount. As an author, though noting auction and dealer advertised prices, I view these with a somewhat jaundiced eye. Rather, I try to find out actual selling prices of items, and thankfully, I know dealers who are willing to share that information with me. You have thousands of pieces priced in this book; hopefully, from this information you will be able to ascertain the pricing realm for items you own." - from the Introduction.
