First Edition. Octavo. First printing. 392(1) pages illustrated by the author. Signed and inscribed by the author along with a portrait drawing titled "Old Matador" by the author. A fascinating autobiography of the remarkable bull fighter, portrait painter, journalist, and San Francisco El Matador night club which was where Herb Caen held court. From his early friendship with Sinclair Lewis to the bull fighting ring, to his art career where his images of Steinbeck, Capote, Bradbury, and many others made him the most famous portrait painter in America. A near fine copy bound in black cloth lettered in silver, ruled in blue, spine lettering silver and ruled in blue, on corners only slightly bumped, in a very good unclipped dust jacker lettered in black and blue tiny chips to spine ends, tiny closed edge tear to upper edge of front panel, each jacket flap has a crease, previous owner's bookplate on rear free endpaper. A very good copy with a few pieces of ephemera laid in including invitations. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 032010

Zustand: Very good. - Original pen-and-ink sketch in the bottom left corner of a slip of stiff cream paper, approximately 2-3/8 inches high by 5-1/8 inches wide. Inscribed and signed in black ink,: "With Greetings / from / George Soper." Together with the recipient's self-addressed envelope. Near fine. The self-addressed envelope supplied by "Master Richard Glasser" bears a 1932 postmark from Welwyn, Hertfordshire, which is where Soper's studio was located. Soper generously sends this presumably young boy a beautiful little original sketch of a man on horseback, leading a second horse and trailed by a dog. The sketch is a version of Soper's etching "Going to Work" [c. 1926].George Soper [1870-1942] was a British painter and printmaker. The son of a horticultural sundriesman, he was born in South Hornsey, Middlesex and began his artistic career at the turn of the century as an illustrator, eventually turning to painting and printmaking. His work revolved around rural subjects and the rural environment. He was elected an associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1918 and became a full member two years later.
