Opens with a brief history of Punch and Judy and ends with 12 scenes from a typical Punch show followed by a paperdoll / cutout Victorian paper theatre. The dictionary includes a varied cast of characters such as the devil, crocodile, the hangman, the clown, and punch as well as terms for "crew" such as the bottler, who collected coins during shows. "As street theater, Punch and Judy has lasted 350 years, and his story hasn't changed much. He takes on the world with a big stick and a cheerfully anarchic attitude, knocking down everyone who tries to contain him, starting with his wife and ending with the devil himself. This little book contains definitions and illustrations of all the elements, characters, and history of Mr. Punch, along with a series of scenes of a typical Punch and Judy show. There's even a tiny cut-out Victorian Punch and Judy theater in the back" (Pat Sweet). Filled with full color illustrations. Bound in white paper covered boards with title label to front board and spine. In illustrated white and red dust jacket featuring a traditional striped curtain from a British seaside Punch and Judy booth with Toby the Dog peeking out on the rear panel.
