First Hugh Thomson-illustrated edition, presentation copy, in the wonderful gilt-stamped emerald binding of a repeating sheep pattern. The inclusion of color illustrations in this work "marked something of a departure from the series which started with CRANFORD fifteen years before" (Spielmann and Jerrold). The Cranford series, of which this production is a part, all feature stunning emerald cloth bindings with elaborately gilt-stamped designs. Thomson made his career out of giving new life to classic English novels with his elegant and vivacious illustrations of society and setting. After this first Eliot commission was received with his usual success, Thomson turned his attention next to SILAS MARNER. Thomson is most famous for his designs and illustrations of Jane Austen's novels, including the iconic "Peacock" PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. Octavo. 7'' x 4.75''. Original elaborately gilt-stamped green pictorial cloth. All edges gilt. Illustrated by Thomson 16 full-page tissue-guarded color plates and 35 full-page black-and-white images.
