From the Foreword by Honourable Edward Roberts Belle Isle, the entrance to the Strait separating Newfoundland and Labrador, was the North American landfall for vessels travelling west from England and Europe. The Strait itself is narrow and its tides are strong. The Canadian Government quickly recognized the hazard these posed for ships. Their response was to build a series of great lighthouses. Les Noseworthy, a talented artist, has captured the light stations on Belle Isle in a wonderful series of pictures, They are a fitting tribute to the Sentinels of Belle Isle. All who care about Newfoundland and Labrador and the history of our people, owe him a debt of gratitude for his record of a remarkable moment in our past. Leslie H. Noseworthy is a well-known businessman and artist, based in St. John s, Newfoundland. Born in St. John s in 1945, Leslie began his lifelong quest as an artist under tutelage of 'Ish' Humber a master at Bishop Field College. In 1966 Leslie founded a commercial art and graphics firm and has continued to the present day plying his craft. His artwork can be found in numerous public, corporate and private collections across North America, South America, and the UK. Leslie's work can be seen in the collection; " Let there be Light" located at Cape Spear, Newfoundland. This large format book, 86 pages measuring 304mm X 224mm is in fine condition.
