Beschreibung
"The Soldiers' Friend," so called because of his advocacy of Civil War veterans and their needs, was a merchant and Democrat turned Republican politician who served New York as representative (1853-55, 1857-65), governor (1865-68) and senator (1869-75). Large, bold "R.E. Fenton" in brown ink, heavy stock 3½" X 2¼" card, n.p., n.y. Very good. Faint age toning; mounting traces on verso. A handsome example. Accompanied by an outstanding 1860s vintage steel-engraved portrait, heavy stock 5 3/4" X 9½", engraved by H.B. Hall of New York. Near fine. Titled "Eminent Upholders in Congress of the War for the Union" in ornate rolling typeface along the lower margin, this depicts twelve notable Congressman, head-and-shoulders portrait each within a small oval. Three ovals occupy the center, the topmost being Fenton. A striking war-date image and superb signature example. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 37179
