Urbane and versatile American poet (Pulitzer Prizes for "Conquistador" in 1932 and "Collected Poems" in 1953), dramatist (Pulitzer Prize for "J.B." in 1958), journalist and critic. Signed First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in Petersburg, Illinois, on 22 August 1970 and with "First Day of Issue" stamped. Fine. Single 6-cent "Edgar Lee Masters American Poet" at upper right. No decorative cachet at left; no recipient's name/address. Near the "sweet spot," MacLeish signs in full in blue fineline. Small portion of original transmittal envelope also present.
