The second - and rarest - edition of the seminal Marxist polemic originally attributed to the Forest-Johnson Tendency (C.L.R. James, Raya Dunayevsakaya, and Grace Lee [later Grace Lee Boggs]) on the bankruptcy of both Stalinism and Trotskyism. The work was originally prepared for the 1950 convention of the Socialist Workers Party and was first published in the September 1950 issue of the Party's Discussion Bulletin. Following James' expulsion from the U.S. in 1953, he settled in England where he attempted to organize "a Marxist group," which was the first to publish the polemic in pamphlet form in 1956. This group consisted of James, Alan Christianson, Cornelius Castoriadis, Cajo Brendel, Theo Massen, and IP Hughes. A new preface was added to this edition and is signed by the aforementioned men (some under pseudonyms), who provide the following caveat: "The signers of this preface do not endorse the details of the analysis or of the conclusions of the document but are agreed that Marxism today can find its way only along the path outlined in it" (p. 5). This preface was later reprinted in the 1969 and 1986 editions. The Facing Reality group published a "second edition" in 1969, in which Martin Glaberman attributed authorship to James (instead of the Forest-Johnson Tendency). In 1986, Charles Kerr published a new edition also attributing authorship to James "[w]ritten in collaboration with Raya Dunayevskaya & Grace Lee," and another edition was published in 2013 by Kerr and PM Press with the same authorship attribution. Stapled grey wrappers (10 ½" x 8 ½") printed in red, 55 p. Light wear to wrappers, bottom left corner bumped. Stamp of the Correspondence [Publishing Committee] to the title page. One copy of this edition in OCLC at the University of Michigan. See, "State Capitalism and World Revolution, 2nd Edition (1956) - C.L.R. James, Raya Dunayevskaya, Grace Lee" on the New York Archives of Autonomist Marxism blog for a history and informal bibliography. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 9845

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Over sixty years ago, C.L.R. James and a small circle of collaborators making up the radical left Johnson-Forest Tendency reached the conclusion that there was no true socialist society existing anywhere in the world. Written in collaboration with Raya Dunayevskaya and Grace Lee Boggs, this is another pioneering critique of Lenin and Trotsky, and reclamation of Marx, from the West Indian scholar and activist, C.L.R. James. Originally published in 1950, this definitive edition includes the original preface from Martin Glaberman to the third edition, C.L.R. James' original introductions to three previous editions and a new introduction from James' biographer Paul Buhle.
