Beschreibung
Octavo, 328pp. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, in the original blue buckram, stamped in gilt, as issued. The text itself is photocopies from earlier editions; the production was clearly done at Meredith's expense. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Meredith on the front free endpaper: "To: Becky; to our future! James Meredith." Meredith was the first African-American student admitted to the University of Mississippi. He applied with the particular goal of pressuring President John F. Kennedy to intervene in southern states, where integration was being massively resisted by local authorites. While Meredith was ultimately admitted, his time on campus was not easy, being consistently harrassed by racist white students. Meredith is still alive as of this listing, and has maintained eclectic political views throughout his life, even supporting the 1967 re-election bid of former Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett, who had so virulently opposed Meredith's enrollment at U-Miss in 1962.
