Beschreibung
This North Dakota attorney and Republican politico wasn't nicknamed "Wild Bill" for nothing: When removed from office for corruption in1934 after serving two years, he signed a Declaration of Independence for the state, declared martial law and barricaded himself in the governor's mansion; he was acquitted on technicalities and actually won a second term, serving from 1937 to 1939; he somehow managed to get elected to the Senate and remained in office from 1941 until his death. TLS, 1p, 8½" X 11", Bismarck, ND, 12 August 1937. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). Very good. Minor original folds and touch of edgewear. Transmits his autograph to this admirer and apologizes that "Your first request must have gone astray. Wishing you the best of success through life." Boldly signed. Accompanied by a fine original glossy 8" X 10" news agency photograph, a candid half-length image showing Langer at right chatting with a dapper gent. Printed caption along top dates this image 28 July 1945 and describes the scene: "The U.S. Senate today ratified the United Nations charter by a vote of 89 to 2. The two senators who voted against the charter were, L to R -- Senator Henrik Shipstead of Minn. and Senator Wm. Langer of N.D." -- not surprising as Langer had long been known for his non-interventionist views. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 49585
