Beschreibung
Autograph album containing numerous autographs including a signed quotation from W B Yeats: "Only the wasteful virtues earn the sun" W B Yeats April 25 1916. The quotation is from Yeats' own poem 'Responsibilities,' 1914 and is DATED ON THE SECOND DAY OF THE EASTER RISING, which only lasted for six days. At the time of the Rising, Yeats was staying at Iles Farm, Far Oakridge, near Stroud, Gloucestershire, the home of the artist William Rothenstein (later Sir William). Yeats knew personally many of the leaders of the Rising and wrote the poem 'Easter 1916' a few months later. Below this is a quotation from Ben Johnson, dated on the same day, by Lalla Vandervelde, wife of the Belgian statesman Emile Vandervelde. Lalla Vandervelde organised séances and had met Yeats through their mutual interest in spiritualism. According to Yeats' biographer R F Foster they 'had a dalliance.' Her memoirs are entitled 'Monarchs and Millionaires' (Thornton Butterworth, 1925.) The third inscription on the page is a quotation from Dante by Percy Dearmer, author of The Parson's Handbook and musical editor of The English Hymnal (1906) and Songs of Praise (1926). The last signature on the page is of the novelist John Galsworthy, signed at Far Oakridge, where he was a frequent guest of William Rothenstein. Other signatures in the album date from 1895 to 1920 and include Tita Brand and Violet V Boucher, actresses; Field-Marshall George Stuart White, VC, hero of Ladysmith, awarded the VC during the Indian Mutiny; Theo Marzials, eccentric poet, one page poem; Eugen Sandow, strongman; Max Beerbohm, cartoonist, with a drawing of the prime minister; Horace G Hutchinson, golf writer; Emile Vandervelde, Belgian statesman; a drawing by J Maurice Rothenstein (son of William and later a director of the Tate Gallery) is loosely inserted; and there are several inscriptions from soldiers wounded at Mons, Cambrai and Ypres. The album is bound in brown cloth with an ornate gilt cover, patterned endpapers, all edges gilt. Front hinge is cracked else condition is very good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 000841
