Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1893. In 2 Volumes. Full leather with gold titles, marbled endpapers plus extra gold decoration and gold-stamped leather inserted at paste-downs. Gilded heads of text blocks. The original Octo is expanded here to a two-volume Quarto, with all original pages present, plus over 120 illustrations, letters and inclusions. The extra-illustration is credited to W. W. Hill. Includes an author signed letter, an autographed note signed by Joseph Jefferson (1829-1905), the actor famous for his stage portrayals of Rip Van Winkle. Plates include some beautiful steel engravings, etchings and lithographs, from the early to late mid-19th Century, from numerous sources. Many portraits of other authors, admirers and acquaintances of Irving, including James Paulding, Sir Walter Scott, Charles Brockden Brown, James Fennimore Cooper, Francis Parkman, Laurence Sterne, Lord Byron, Thomas Moore, Macaulay et al. Numerous patriotic inclusions, and engravings related to New York (city and state) and also to Irving's 18-year sojourn in Europe, especially Spain. Laid in, inside a hand-annotated envelope, is an autograph of Irving from the end of an authenticated letter written in 1818. This set of books was sold to the previous owner by Argosy Books of New York (date of sale unknown). Condition: Very good with some shelf wear, small losses to leather at edges of spines, slight rubbing of board corners, a small lifted and rubbed spot to foot of spine of Vol I.
