Beschreibung
Octavo, typed letter signed "W.E.B. Du Bois," March 7, 1961, on personal letterhead, written to Milton Rogovin, the iconic photographer. "My dear Mr. Rogovin: Answering your letter of March 6 may I say that I shall probably be in New York March 26th or 27th, but you had better phone me on the 25th to be sure -----" Below Du Bois's signature Rogovin added in pen, "Minor White, En 2/9148." ----- Four years before Du Bois wrote to Rogovin, William Tallmadge, a professor of music at the State University College, who was recording the music in the storefront Black churches on the city's East Side, commissioned Rogovin to photograph the congregations. According to the "Guardian," Rogovin was self-taught, or as he put it "a rank amateur." Nonetheless, his pictures came to the attention of the photographer Minor White, who was an editor at "Aperture," the pre-eminent photography magazine. White mentored Rogovin, and in 1962 published a portfolio of 48 of these photographs. Du Bois wrote a glowing introduction to the volume. Not published in Herbert Aptheker's edited "The Correspondence of W.E.B. Du Bois." The letter is professionally matted and framed, ideal for display. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers ABE-1701530037813
