One rare envelope with stamp and red seal on the reverse and one four page ALS, double sides, on cream coloured note card. SIZE: 10" x 6 3/8", folded to 5" x 6 3/8" written in blue ink. Dated: March 16 1885. Signed by Author. ELLEN TERRY Dame Alice Ellen Terry February 27, 1848 in Coventry, Warwickshire, England, United Kingdom - July 21, 1928 in Small Hythe, Kent, England, United Kingdom Ellen Terry was considered the leading Shakespearean and comic actress in Britain as well as had much success in her American tours. Two of her most famous roles were Portia in The Merchant of Venice and Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing. Virginia Woolf s was obsessed with this Victorian actress. She captivated many an artist and was painted by the famous John Singer Sargent in 1889 as Lady Macbeth, as well as by her first husband George Frederic Watts in 1864 in a portrait called Choosing She was a muse to many."…during that short time, she had the opportunity to meet many cultured, talented and important people, such as poets Robert Browning and Alfred, Lord Tennyson; prime ministers William Ewart Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli; and photographer Julia Margaret Cameron. Because of Watts's paintings of her and her association with him, she "became a cult figure for poets and painters of the later Pre-Raphaelite and Aesthetic movements, including Oscar Wilde" Michael R. Each day I have been going to go to your Mother, to thank her for some lovely roses, and thank the pleasure of seeing you all and each day something has happened to stay me- this last week I ve been quite ill- I suppose you re not right yet, but I will at least send you my love and a little flower, and I will try to see your Mother, or Milly[?], if not Jon tomorrow= There s your picture at last!!! And you shall tell me if you like it.When we meet.
