A brilliant and immersive, all-consuming read about one fourteen-year-old girl's heart-stopping fight for her own soul.
Turtle Alveston is a survivor. At fourteen, she roams the woods along the northern California coast. The creeks, tide pools, and rocky islands are her haunts and her hiding grounds, and she is known to wander for miles. But while her physical world is expansive, her personal one is small and treacherous: Turtle has grown up isolated since the death of her mother, in the thrall of her tortured and charismatic father, Martin. Her social existence is confined to the middle school (where she fends off the interest of anyone, student or teacher, who might penetrate her shell) and to her life with her father.
Then Turtle meets Jacob, a high-school boy who tells jokes, lives in a big clean house, and looks at Turtle as if she is the sunrise. And for the first time, the larger world begins to come into focus: her life with Martin is neither safe nor sustainable. Motivated by her first experience with real friendship and a teenage crush, Turtle starts to imagine escape, using the very survival skills her father devoted himself to teaching her. What follows is a harrowing story of bravery and redemption. With Turtle's escalating acts of physical and emotional courage, the reader watches, heart in throat, as this teenage girl struggles to become her own hero—and in the process, becomes ours as well.
Shot through with striking language in a fierce natural setting, My Absolute Darling is an urgently told, profoundly moving read that marks the debut of an extraordinary new writer.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 420 pages. Published in 2017. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most sensational literary debuts of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly copies that are signed on a tipped-in page. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Gabriel Tallent's "My Absolute Darling". His masterly first novel: "The breakout debut of the year" (The New York Times). "The word 'masterpiece' has been cheapened by too many blurbs. But 'My Absolute Darling' absolutely is one" (Stephen King). "A major American debut that incorporates psychological realism of the highest order juxtaposed with nature writing that at times is so lyrical you might as well be reading poetry" (The Houston Chronicle). "The year's must-read novel. Tallent in this debut makes an old story - the drama of coming of age - feel original and full of youthful power" (The Times of London). The flood of mostly positive, indeed rave reviews must have come as an immense and gratifying relief for the author, who spent, by his own account, almost ten years writing, re-writing, and re-writing again his gripping novel. An absolute "must-have" title for Gabriel Tallent collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, placed, and dated in black pen-marker on the title page by the author: "Gabriel Tallent NYC 6/26/18". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page, as many copies available online are. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed, placed, and dated copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant American writers of our time. A fine copy. ISBN 0735211175. Signed by Author. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 21902
