The (or a) dedication copy, inscribed late by the author to his now wife, "Then, as now, love - [To the onlie begetter H.W.] from Sydney X 1969", and with his autograph correction on p. [7]. Sydney Goodsir Smith only married Hazel Williamson in 1967, after the death of his first wife, Marion, the year before. This is "the rarest of all Smith's publications", according to Richie McCaffery, and "only 30 copies were printed". Writing to Alexander Scott on 2 March 1951, Smith urged discretion about the dedication - "one does not wish to tempt Providence excessively". "I told my luve a story / It has nae end; / The aipple and the hazel / They blamed as ane; / The aipple was fir singin / And the hazel for luve - / And aye he white mune ridin / High above. // The story has nae endin / For their luve had nae end; / The hazel and the aipple / They were as ane; / The aipple was a puir bard / And the hazel his luve - / And aye the white mune ridin / High above.".
