Spine slightly cocked. A bit of wear to spine ends. Inscribed on front endpaper: "Affectionally your son Charles" and dated Jamaica Plain Apr. 11, 1891. At the end of the preface, Dole has written: "The following paragraph is inserted in the 2nd edition," followed by the entire paragraph, over two pages (see photos). The author, according to Wikipedia, "was an influential Unitarian minister, speaker, and writer in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston, Massachusetts, and Chairman of the Association to Abolish War." His son moved to Hawaii and established what would become the Dole Food Co.! Laid in is publisher's 16-page pamphlet about the book.
