Large jacket chip at top of rear panel, a few other tiny edge chips and couple of archivally closed (on verso) edge tears. A tight and attractive first edition of this volume in "The American Heritage Series." This copy extra-illustrated with added frontispiece in the form of a Typed Note Signed from Millis, 1p, 8" X 10", New York, NY, 5 April 1941. Addressed to Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. Cordial note to an admirer -- in part: "To answer your two questions (a) though busy enough in other ways, I am not at work on any book now and (b) I do not in fact 'come' from Cleveland, although I lived there for some years as a boy." Boldly signed in full. Unusual anthology of military writings, ranging from Franklin, Washington and other founding fathers in the 18th century up through Ike, JFK, Robert S. McNamara and others in the post-WW2 era. Front flyleaf bears gift inscription from George Patrick Welch (1900-73), noted WW2 officer on Matthew Ridgway's staff and author: "To / Col Jack V. Louterman -- / to confound your enemies -- / Patrick Welch / Colorado Springs, Col / June 66." A most unusual copy.
