Rembrandt Peale (1778 1860) was an American artist and museum keeper, the second son of Charles Wilson Peale, A prolific portrait painter, he was especially acclaimed for his likenesses of presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. One of his most famous works, Patriae Pater (1824), is a portrait of George Washington designed to project the dignity and gravitas of Washington's character. This portrait, known for its idealized and almost monumental quality, became one of the most recognized images of Washington and was widely reproduced.
