Born in 1943 in Abilene, Texas, Diane Stanley is the author and/or illustrator of more than sixty books for children and is noted especially for her series of picture book biographies. Many of her books have been honored as American Library Association Notable Books and she has twice received both the Boston Globe/Hornbook Award and the Society of Children's Book Writers' Golden Kite Award. She was also the recipient of the Washington Post/Children's Book Guild Award for the body of her work. In this work, as well as in several others, Stanley collaborates with her gifted husband, Peter Vennema. "These seasoned raconteurs have sorted out historical facts, speculation and conjecture to neatly piece together the puzzle of Shakespeare's life.
