Wide octavo. Dated June 12, 1917, warmly inscribed by the author to Dorothy and Frank Dean (possibly better known as Doty & Dutz Dean) of Nome and their dog Mars, though Esther Darling does not sign her name. (We know her hand from several letters and other inscribed copies.) Color frontispiece retains its tissue guard. Darling helped found the Nome Kennel Club with Scotty Allan. Baldy was Allan"s famous lead sled dog. Allan's exploits during the early All Alaska Sweepstakes races are said to have provided the inspiration for the character John Thornton in "Call of the Wild."
