First edition. With Comment by Shirley Graham. Octavo. 192pp. Pictorial wrappers lettered in white. Tape reinforced covers and front cover tear reinforced on the verso, a dime-sized stain on the front wrap, thus good or a little better copy. A presentation copy Inscribed: "For Paul Robeson, W. E. B. Du Bois" on the half-title page. This volume tells the story of the indictment of Du Bois and four codefendants as unregistered foreign agents of the Soviet Union, and describes his arraignment and fingerprinting in February 1951, his trial that November, and his eventual acquittal, with Albert Einstein outspoken in his support. Despite many frightened sponsors withdrawing from Du Bois's 83rd birthday celebration in February, both Paul Robeson and E. Franklin Frazier "spoke courageously and feelingly" at the milestone event. Additionally laid in are printed and written invitations for a reception given by "The Legation of the Hungarian People's Republic." An extraordinary presentation copy, linking two of the most influential Civil Rights leaders of the 20th Century, we haven't seen any other books inscribed by Du Bois to Robeson on the market. Soft cover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Octavo, pictorial wrappers lettered in white; extremities rubbed, stains on front cover. First edition, first printing. A presentation copy, inscribed, "For Yolande, 1952, W. E. B. Du Bois," on the half-title page. Du Bois's daughter Yolande was born in 1900 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, his own birthplace. From Atlanta, he wrote her, then age seven: "But most of all I think papa misses you when he comes in and has nobody to ---- interrupt his work." After Yolande's death in 1961, Du Bois insisted that she be buried in his hometown's Mahaiwe Cemetery "beside her mother and the little boy," his brother Burghardt. The only known Du Bois family connected copy not institutionalized. A remarkable presentation copy, linking father and daughter. Inscribed by Author(s).
