Casual, chatty account of Franklin's wartime efforts to retrieve Americans held by the British - by commissioning three cutters, French-owned & Irish-manned, to waylay and capture British ships & crew to exchange for the Americans. Franklin, American Commissioner to the Court of Versailles and later a Judge of the French Admiralty, became enmeshed in French duplicity & bureaucracy and gave up the plan after a year. Light wear to book; jacket shows light chipping, couple of longish tears & crease to front panel, short tear to rear panel. Text clean; [12], 198 pages; index, bibliographic commentary, appendix tabulating the seizures of the ships involved; b/w plates - mostly reproducing documents; 4 maps + map endsheets, as called for.
