Front and rear wrappers bright. 180 pages including three-page list of Chaplin's early films with release dates to the rear. 210mm x 124mm.***Contents: The Legend, Keystone Studios, The End of Sennett's Contract, Essanay, Mutual Film Corporation; The First National, Postscript, List of films and index. ***'Chaplin is a legend and the trouble with being a legend is that almost before you realize it, you are encrusted with the ideas of others, interpreted out of the everyday world into one of the words, metaphors, symbols. So much has been written about Chaplin that it sometimes feels like clawing through cotton wool before you reach his creation, Charlie. Most of what has been written is both as true and as untrue as any cliche, and just as unhelpful. ***Isabel Quigly recalls the early comedies, made between 1913 and 1919, when Chaplin soared to fame and success---Chaplin developed over these years, but the great leap forward took place early with the creation of Charlie, and this book helps to show how disconcertingly different was Charlie's character from that of its creator, a difference which grew even more marked in the later films. Isabel Quigly succeeds also in re-examining the moods and feelings of these early comedies from a fresh viewpoint, consciously detaching herself from most of what has been written on Chaplin.' (Quote from inside front wrapper blurb). ***Isabel Quigly is a writer, translator and film critic. She worked for Penguin Books and Red Cross Geneva. Between 1956 and 1966, she was film critic of The Spectator. From 1985 to 1997 she was literary editor of The Tablet. She has written for many journals and newspapers, and has been on the jury of literary prizes including the Booker Prize jury in 1986. ***First impression of the true first paperback edition. Uncommon. Of interest to collectors of film and cinema first editions and Charlie Chaplin. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 3918
