Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 260 pages. Published in 1975. The author's fifth novel. One of Jerzy Kosinski's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are many. Published in a small and limited first print run by Houghton Mifflin as a hardcover original only. Even by the high standards of American book publishing of the time, the production values of the book are stupendous: Elegant black cloth boards with gilt titles embossed on cover and spine, rich orange topstain, DJ that reproduces the original art by Jan Lebenstein personally selected by the author, and printed on archival stock paper in the United States that has lost none of its pristine whiteness. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Jerzy Kosinski's "Cockpit". Arguably his best book since "The Painted Bird" (1965) : An examination of paranoia, madness, and what identification - as opposed to identity, the rallying cry of our sad, unimaginative time - finally means. "An agent known only as Tarden is a former operative of the mysterious security agency, The Service. He has erased himself from all dossiers and transcripts. Now a fugitive, he moves across the landscape free of identity, and in search of adventure and intrigue. But Tarden is a man of many disguises, and he is alternately Avenger and Savior, Judge and Trickster, as he enters the lives of others, forcing them into the arena of his judgment. Kosinski at his most startling and powerful, stripping away pretension and illusions of security to reveal the source of real strength within" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Jerzy Kosinski collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, dated (shortly after publication), and inscribed in blue pen-marker on the front free endpaper by the author: "For Sandy and Anatole, who know that things hidden nap at all doors, affectionately, Jerzy June 14, 1975". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. He then signed the succeeding page again using the same blue pen-marker: "Jerzy Kosinski". The couple-recipients, who are named, were close friends of the author. This title is a great book. This is the only such double-signed, post-publication dated, and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. It is, quite simply, the single most beautiful signed copy we have ever seen. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws or are in multiple subsequent printings yet command many hundreds of dollars more. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JERZY KOSINSKI TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0395206715. Signed by Author.
