Grafton first edition 1911 hardcover, sewn-bound in red cloth with faded gilt lettering on front cover, and almost completely-gone gilt on spine, is in FAIR condition, having stains and rubbing to covers and spine; corners bumped and worn; fraying to top and bottom spine; some shaking to volume, and apparently former owner attempted a repair in first endpaper section; some staining to pages throughout book; apparently published with uncut pages, and some page bottoms (pp.23-30) have some tearing probably due to attempts to open pages with a blade. Some additional ephemera with book: a tree leaf between pages 122 and 123, and a programme from the 1915 season of McGroarty's "The Mission Play" inserted before first blank page. BOOK IS SIGNED BY AUTHOR MCGROARTY in black or dark brown ink on first free endpaper: "Faithfully Yours, John Steven McGroarty." Illustrated with eleven b&w photo plates. Beautifully written by (later poet laureate of California) McGroarty, who was also a columinst for the Los Angeles Times and playwright. History. United States. State and local. West. California. DB.
