Beschreibung
First Edition (NAP). This book is signed and inscribed to the late actor and musician Theodore Bikel. It came from the library of Mr. Bikel's ex-wife. His bookplate can be found on the front inside cover. The inscription is on the first front end paper and reads as follows: 'For Theodore Bikel, So that you do not forget your first visit to Our "Ageless Land", Olga Levinson.' Above this inscription the author also wrote 'Heyritz Castle, Windhock (?), March 1965 (the author lived in a castle). You can see the blue covers of the book in the photos. They are quite clean. They have very little wear, a crease near the top of the spine. The edges and corners are in excellent condition. The spine is very slightly slanted forward. The book is pretty solidly bound. I saw two instances where there is a little space between two facing pages. None of the pages are in the least bit loose. The pages are quite clean. I saw only a few instances of very minor soiling, and only in the blank margins. There is a little spotting on the inside covers and end papers. I didn't see any creasing or dogeared corners. No markings. No attachments (with the exception of Mr. Bikel's bookplate). And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in this book. The dust jacket is rated only Good. You can see it in the first few photographs. The front cover has little bit of scuffing, a tiny loss off the top edge, and a crease adjacent to the spine. The red of the spine is faded. There is some smooth scuffing on it, as well as a small tear and wear at it's top edge. The rear cover has spotting/foxing and some discoloration as well. The flaps have a little foxing at their top edge. There's no printing on them, with the exception of a '17/6' the bottom of the front flap. The dust jacket will be fitted with a protective cover. 'Theodore Bikel studied acting at Britain's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made his London stage debut in1948. He was also a widely recognized and recorded folk singer and guitarist. In 1959, he co-founded the Newport Folk Festival and created the role of Captain von Trapp opposite Mary Martin in the original Broadway production of The Sound of Music. In 1969, Bikel began acting and singing on stage as Tevye in the musical Fiddler on the Roof, a role he performed more often than any other actor to date. He appeared in films including The African Queen, Moulin Rouge), , I Want to Live!, My Fair Lady, and The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming. For his portrayal of Sheriff Max Muller in The Defiant Ones, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Bikel was president of the Associated Actors and Artists of America until 2014, and was president of Actors' Equity in the late 1970s and early 1980s. For most of his acting career, he became known for his versatility in playing characters of different nationalities, claiming he took on those different personalities so his acting would "never get stale." On television, he played an Armenian merchant on Ironside, a Polish professor on Charlie's Angels, an American professor on The Paper Chase, a Bulgarian villain on Falcon Crest, a Russian on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and an Italian on Murder, She Wrote. 'Olga Levinson was born to British immigrant Edward Cohen and Cecily Cohen, née Steinberg, of Poland. She spent her childhood with her four siblings in Johannesburg. Levinson studied art history and English at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. Levinson then went to Trinity College in London, where she studied drama. In 1943 she married the mining magnate Jack Louis Levinson, who later became the mayor of Windhoek. Among other things, Levinson wrote the first comprehensive historical work on Namibia, the Story of Namibia. Levinson was instrumental in founding the National Theater of Namibia and the Arts Association of South West Africa.'. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 002011
