First edition, stated, with the unusual Harper date code of ?-c, corresponding to an unknown month in 1928. Signed by the author on the front endpaper: "Inscribed with the author's greetings to the reader / Henry Hallam Saunderson." Eliot served as Harvard's president from 1869 to 1909, the longest such term in the university's history. A to-from note by a former owner, dated Jan. 1929, on the same page as the author signature. The book is square and the textblock is unmarked; corners sharp, spine ends bumped. The dust jacket is not price-clipped (original price $2.00); chipped, soiled, and edgeworn; a dime-sized hole in the spine; spine is age-darkened; Brodart protected.
