First Edition (SD). This is a very unique book. Firstly, it is the Only signed copy for sale on the Internet. And secondly, it was signed by both the author, Adeline Adams, and by the wife of the late Childe Hassam, Kathleen Maud Doane Hassam. Moreover, it is inscribed to Henry Kleemann of Kleemann Galleries in New York. Kleemann Galleries became the sole publisher of Hassam's lithographs in 1934. Henry Kleemann wrote the introduction to the price list he issued in that year. Childe Hassam died in 1935. She was the subject in a number of his paintings. Encyclopedia. refers to this book as 'an indispensable study of Hassam.' Adelina Adams was an American writer and the wife of the sculptor, Herbert Adams. The chief subjects of her writings were American fine artists and art history. She began her art studies at the Massachusetts Normal Art School. She met Herbert Adams in Paris in 1887. She posed for a marble bust that was eventually exhibited at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Adams advocated for female sculptors including Laura Gardin Fraser, Evelyn Beatrice Longman, Janet Scudder, Bessie Porter Vonnoh, Abastenia St. Leger Eberle and Anna Hyatt Huntington. She was a member of the Cornish (NH) Suffrage League. She was awarded a Special Medal of Honor by the National Sculpture Society. You can see the purple covers in the photos. There are a handful of whitish spots on both the front and rear. The gilt lettering/design on the front is very bright, bright also on the spine but set against the light fading of the purple. The cover edges look very good. Very small spots of rub-through at 3 of the 4 corners. A sliver of loss of the top layer of the cover at both spine ends, a little fraying as well. The top page edge is gilt. The middle and bottom ones are deckled or rough-cut. They did a good job, though the middle edge of the signed page is rough at its lower half. Very solidly bound book from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers, including the signed one, are very foxed. The foxing is milder on the half-title page. The color frontispiece looks great as does the protective tissue guard. The title page has only a few light amber spots. The middle page edges have a good deal of foxing and some of it migrates over the edge onto the actual pages (some pages are spared). The amber spotting can also be seen off the bottom edges of many of the text pages. The semi-glossy pages containing the paintings (all black-and-white) have, surprisingly, almost entirely escaped the foxing/spotting, a reversal of what is usually the case (the illustrations are all in excellent condition). The text pages are otherwise exceptionally clean and fairly bright. I'm not finding any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And the aforementioned signatures and inscription are the only writing to be found anywhere in the book. 'Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Childe Hassam became one of America's most noted Impressionist painters, but he never labeled himself in that way asserting he was more interested in the emotional content of his paintings than the technique of applying color. Watercolor was another specialty, and Hassam was one of the founders of the New York Water Color Society. He studied art at the Lowell Institute and the Boston Art Club under Ignaz Gaugengigl. In 1883, he had his first one-man exhibition of watercolors at the prestigious Williams & Everett Gallery in Boston, and that same year, he and his wife traveled to Europe, living for three years in Paris, where he studied at the Academie Julian under Louis Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre. He was a founder of the Ten American Painters, a rebellion against what the members perceived as mediocrity of the Society of American Artists.' Childe Hassam painted in many places, in East Hampton, New York; the Isles of Shoals, on the coast of NH; Old Lyme, Ct.; Charleston, South Carolina; New York City.
