Another fine contribution to the Classics and by a leading scholar. Scarce in the trade in this SIGNED state, inscribed to me personally in the presence of another bookseller. Sterling condition softcover copy, with unfurled tips, tight binding, and clean internals, showing only very slight shelf- and edge-wear. Stated first paperback edition, the true first edition having been published in 1989. From the personal library of the noted English historian of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, Professor Peter Morris Green, now of Iowa City, Iowa, 99 years old, nearly blind, but still working, in this case on a new translation and with annotations, of Herodotus, his favorite historian. Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. [6], 7-328 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 357402

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First Edition. Superior copy, gift-quality condition, inside and out, no discernible wear, bright and shiny dust jacket, not price-clipped. SIGNED by the author at title page, and from the personal library of the noted English historian of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, Professor Peter Morris Green, now of Iowa City, Iowa, 99 years old, nearly blind, but still working, in this case on a new translation and with annotations, of Herodotus, his favorite historian. From the publisher's blurb, "Wide-ranging essays reflect the author's omnivorous delight in the variety and complexity of ancient culture. Green's special interest - Alexander, the Hellenistic Age, Ovid, and Juvenal - are all well represented, as well as other subjects, like the Victorian approaches to the classics, the Egypt of Tutankhamun and the Delphic oracle, archaic notions of death, Aristophanes' play 'The Clouds' as lethal social satire, and attitudes to sex in Greek and Roman literature. All models of how we can `translate' the Classical world into the contemporary world." Black cloth over boards, Thames and Hudson dueling dolphin image stamped in gilt to front board, gilt lettering to spine.
