First edition of Gibbons' adaptation For U.S. Citizens of Dilworth's important mathematics text book: "The Schoolmaster's Assistant, Being a Compendium of Arithmetic both Practical and Theoretical." Twelvemo (6 5/8 x 3 7/8 inches; 168 x 98 mm). [2], xvi [i.e. xiv], 228, [2, blank] pp. Date is from the Preface, signed by Gibbons. With at least 22 new additions by Gibbon as stated on the Table of Contents and marked with a "+". We could find no copies of this edition at auction, nor at any library. The earliest copy is from 1810. Full newer sheep (?). Spine ruled in gilt. Newer endpapers. Title-page and page 3-4 with small repairs, with no loss. Folding chart with closed tear repair with no loss. Small tear at bottom margin of leaf T, not affecting text. Previous owner's old ink signature to page 1 of text and to title-page, dated 1804. Some general soiling and dampstaining, but overall a very good copy. Very clean for American paper of this era. An American edition was published in 1769; by 1786 it had reached 23 editions, and through 1800 it was the most popular mathematics text in America." (Wikipedia). "According to the New England Historical Society, The Schoolmaster's Assistant by Thomas Dilworth dominated the teaching of arithmetic and monetary educatoin to young Americans. By the start of the Revolution, the book had gone through six editions. However, since it was 'very British indeed' and used classic British anecdotes and examples to help students understand, it quickly fell into disfavor in the the new republic.
