Beschreibung
Signed first edition of Forster's pageant play, the second of two produced with Ralph Vaughan Williams as musical director. Like the earlier ABINGER HARVEST, ENGLAND'S PLEASANT LAND was originally written for a village pageant with the musical collaboration of Vaughn Williams. First performed in 1938 and published in the early months of Britain's entry into World War II, the play is a historical panorama with broad appeal to national sentiment, on the "genuine and tragic theme" of the English countryside's growth and destruction. Vaughan William's "exciting music" (Forster) for the play has since been recorded, and the short pieces "Exit for the Ghosts of the Past" and "A Funeral March for the Old Order" were later re-used as partial basis for his Fifth Symphony. This copy was previously owned by the eminent twentieth-century opera historian and Verdi scholar Ralph Vaughan Williams. 7'' x 4.5''. Original orange cloth. In original unclipped (3s. 6d.) yellow dust jacket. 79, [1] pages. Signed by Forster on title page. Ownership signature of George Whitney Martin on front free endpaper, dated June 1968. Offsetting to endpapers, light soil to boards and jacket. Jacket spine toned. Very good plus in very good jacket. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 51514
