Beschreibung:

Folio, 36 x 29 cm. Limited edition, copy 35 of 50 of eight etchings by Isabel Bishop signed in facsimile. Until this printing, only proofs of these images were ever printed. Bishop died in 1988 never finding the plates for these studies. She spoke often of her search for these missing plates noting they were among the best she had done. The plates were eventually found in hallway cabinet of her home in Riverdale. Her son authorized this work by Steve Sholinsky, Bishop's printer since 1977 -- on Rives Heavyweight paper. Each plate housed in a separate titled folder. Portfolio of etchings and preliminaries loose as issued. Fine in fine beige clamshell box lettered in gilt. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 19037

Bishop, Isabel (illustrator). Bishop, Isabel. EIGHT ETCHINGS 1927-1934. Portfolio of eight etchings, published in 1989 by the Sylvan Cole Gallery and Midtown Galleries. Includes T3, T5, T7, T11, T14, T12B, T15 and T17. Cloth covered clamshell box with title and introduction, contents and justification (this being #25/50 of the total edition comprising, comprising 50 portfolios, ##1/50-50/50, seven Proof suites ##I/VII-VII/VII, and one each "Whitney Proof," "Bon a Tirer," and "Printer's Proof" sets. ), Published posthumously, with the portfolio number in pencil at the bottom of the justification page, and the eight etchings, each in a separate titled folder, and each numbered 25/50 and with Bishop's signature in facsimile. In very Fine condition, with no signs of wear. Although Isabel Bishop was a prolific printmaker throughout her career, only a few of the prints she did between 1925 and 1978 were published in editions. Bishop herself printed proofs of most of the prints for gifts, sale, or for her own records. There is no record of the number of such proofs, though in most cases it was very small. In 1978 Associated American Artists issued EIGHT ETCHINGS I, the first item in the effort made by Bishop with Sylvan Cole and Stephen Sholinsky to produce editions of all of her prints. Between 1980 and 1988 when Bishop died 56 of her earlier prints had been published by A.A.A. or by the Sylvan Cole Gallery, including sixteen in two subsequent portfolios, EIGHT ETCHINGS II (1981) and ISABEL BISHOP, EIGHT ETCHINGS 1930-1959 (1985); the remaining 40 were published individually, in editions varying between 25 and 75 each. When Bishop moved out of her studio in Union Square in 1895 she made an unsuccessful effort to locate the remaining plates of early etchings, and these were considered lost. After her death in 1988, sixteen additional plates were found by her son, stored inside of copies of National Geographic Magazine. These were published by Cole and Midtown in two portfolios, EIGHT ETCHINGS 1925-1931 and EIGHT ETCHINGS 1927-1934 (For this information about the search for and eventual discovery of these plates I am indebted to Stephen Sholinsky, who printed all of the editions). SYLVAN COLE'S OWN COMPLETE SET OF THE FOUR BISHOP PORTFOLIOS HE PUBLISHED (AS DIRECTOR OF ASSOCIATED AMERICAN ARTISTS AND LATER AS OWNER OF THE SYLVAN COLE GALLERY), WITH A TOTAL OF 32 ORIGINAL ETCHINGS BY ISABEL BISHOP, 16 SIGNED IN PENCIL AND 16 WITH A STAMPED SIGNATURE. Cole, the dean of American print dealers, was a close friend of Bishop's and supervised the compilation of Teller's catalogue raisonne of her prints. He kept these portfolios in his private collection until his death. ***** Four portfolios, each containing eight original etchings by Bishop, each in its own folder. Each portfolio is from a total edition of 60, all printed on fine Rives wove paper. ***** The first portfolio (1981) is copy number 2 (signed by Bishop under the justification), copy number 1 having been given to the artist. ***** The second portfolio (1985) is one of only 7 sets of artist's proofs, with a signed presentation inscription from the artist to Sylvan Cole. ***** The third and fourth portfolios (1989) are the unique sets of bons à tirer (BATs). Since the BATs must be printed before the prints can be editioned, THESE ARE THE VERY FIRST PROOFS PRINTED. ***** Folio. Loose as issued. FINE AND BRIGHT, with no defects. In the original cloth clamshell cases (a little trivial wear to two of the cases). ***** IMPORTANT NOTE: During March, 2006, hundreds of prints represented as being from "the Sylvan Cole collection" were sold at public auction. In fact, ALL of these items were from his leftover gallery inventory, not his private collection. As far as I know, the few items I offer from Sylvan's collection are the ONLY items anywhere on the market which are actually from his private collection (which he kept in his apartment, not his gallery). I acquired them all directly from Sylvan (my uncle), mainly in spring, 2005. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 39036
