Originally published in 1919, this is "perhaps the most popular pro-slavery text in United States' history." (Joe Lockard). Edwards (1855-1938) was well-known as a journalist, novelist, and editor. Written in dialect, the story of a faithful slave uninterested in freedom had a strong appeal to the America of Jim Crow and the Ku Klux Klan. Softbound, with stapled tan paper wraps, brown lettering on the front cover. This is a Later Printing, from 1923, that has been SIGNED by the author on the half-title page. Clean text; 44 pages, with publisher's advert in the rear. This printing has the map of the travels added to the center of the book between pages 24 and 25. Light soiling to the paper; and there is a 3/4" section clipped out of the top of the half-title page. In an archival plastic protector. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
