Presented here is the Infamous horror novel chronicling the demonic possession of an eleven-year-old daughter of a famous actress. Blatty was inspired by a 1949 case of exorcism he heard of while a Georgetown student. Blatty wrote the screenplay and produced the widely successful film released in 1973. The terror began so unobtrusively: noises in Regan's room, an odd smell, misplaced furniture, and an icy chill. Small annoyances for which Chris MacNeill, Regan's movie star mother, easily found explainable. The changes in eleven-year-old Regan were so gradual that Chris, busy filming a new picture, did not recognize how much her daughter's behavior had altered. And even when she did, the endless medical tests shed no light on her symptoms, which grew more severe and eerie. It was as if a different personality invaded and the home thickened with a sense of forboding. Chris desperately turned from unhelpful doctors to Father Damien Karras. Father Karras is a Jesuit priest trained as a psychiatrist with a deep knowledge of satanism and possession. Might exorcism be the answer to this demonic force loosed? Damien Karras resists the possibility. In its long history, the Church has been profoundly skeptical of possession. But finally, it came down to a matter of Regan's life, or death! That meant the time had come for that solemn and impacable right binding exorcist and demon in mortal combat. No reader of this fantastic and deeply religious novel will come away untouched by the power of the ritual, or unaffected by those things in this world which cannot be explained by rational inquiry!
