With a wonderful inscription by the author, penned in black ink on Battle of Britain Day itself (the single most famous day and night of the air battle that saved Britain from Nazi conquest),: "To Harry/ With all my best wishes/ Len Deighton/ 15th September 1977/ To commemorate the Battle of Britain/ And your love of the Spitfire." The introduction by historian A. J. P. Taylor makes the case for FIGHTER being one of the most superbly detailed, accurate accounts of the Battle of Britain. In particular, the narrative focusing on the hasty but crucial development of the Spitfire fighter is a great example of Deighton's often epic ability to make military history come alive for the casual reader.
