Beschreibung

Beschreibung:

First Edition (Appleton '(1)' at the bottom of the last page of the book. Signed and inscribed by the author on the first front end paper. The inscription reads: 'for__________, with best wishes for a promising career (yours, of course) and certainly brilliant in writing, Yurrell.' Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy of this book for sale anywhere on the Internet. It was his first novel. I don't know whether or not he wrote another one. You can see the covers in the photos provided. They are very clean. There is a little bit of toning at the blue margins. The red of the spine is a little bit faded. That has made the gilt lettering there, which is not worn, appear less bright. The edges and corners of the covers are in very good shape. There's just a little crinkling at the bottom edge of the spine. The top page edge is light blue, some of color near to the spine has faded off. The middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. They did a very good job. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout. These pages appear to be exceptionally clean. In scrolling through I'm not finding any soiling. That's also the case for the inside covers and end papers. I'm also not seeing any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. So this is a very solid book and the pages are in excellent condition. From the New York Times review of the novel in 1954: 'SEX ON THE BAYOU might be the subtitle for this genre work, a study of life and love (or loves) in the watery land of South Louisiana. For a variation on a theme that has provided the pattern for a number of earlier novels of the Cajun country. Mr.Yentzen, part Louisiana-French, part Danish, has lived much of his life in the bayou region. He writes of a place and folk with whom he has clearly been in association. His style is simple, his words direct, pared-down. Some may find a few of his scenes, his use of five (and also four) letter words over-strong. But the young writer has a good understanding of his locale and his people, of the motivations of their lives, and also a sharp comprehension of children, of the cruelties, the irritations and yearnings of the young. To the general reader the book may seem rather heavily regional, too unrelieved in its preoccupations. Nevertheless this first novel is an interesting and creditable work.'.
