Beschreibung
In German. Zweite, erweiterte Auflage (Second, expanded edition). Signiert und bezeichnet (Signed and Inscribed). Auch drei signierte Briefe des Autors, mit einem romantischen hopefulness, 1 in Deutschland und 2 in Englisch (Also three Signed letters from the author, with a romantic hopefulness, 1 in German and 2 in English). Martin Porkay was a Hungarian art and forgery expert who focused in particular on Rembrandt and his works. Porkay discovered one of the most sensational Rembrandt forgeries, a self-portrait from 1658 that a Swiss collector paid close to 1 million Swiss francs for. Porkay has a long Wikipedia profile in Hungarian and the Google Translate is pretty awful but you can give it a shot. In a letter (included in this sale) written in German in 1954 to an American woman named something like Greiseldis Maria Blanche Von Duelong Porkay referenced his soon-to-be-released Das Gegeisselte Rembrandt-Bild, but more interesting (or entertaining) are the two other letters (in English) he wrote to this woman in March and April of 1955. She was in Europe and they had met only once before for lunch, probably in 1954. He talks about the 'very deep' impressions she made upon him, and that he has 'no inferiority complex on account of my age' (he was 65) and that he has a 'wonderful idea' that she come to Munich for the weekend as his guest and wires her tickets. ' I will let you open a beautiful little apartment with the view upon the park in my hotel. I can assure you that you will never forget this weekend. You will be spoiled and adored with all Hungarian spirit and I am absolutely sure that it will not be our last meeting in this life.' The third letter, sent six weeks later, indicates that his overture was not successful, but he keeps trying. All three letters, by the way, are in excellent condition. They all have their postmarked envelopes. The book that he sent her is in very good condition. As you can see from the photographs, the covers are mostly clean though there is a narrow line of darkening at the bottom edge and a small stain near the rear covers top edge. The book has a glassine dust jacket cover which was likely with the original book although it is shorter than the book which explains the darkening at the bottom. This book is very solidly bound, square and tight. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. The pages are very clean and bright. There is light spotting/foxing at the top and bottom margins of the glossy half-title and title page. Actually all the pages are of a glossy material and occasionally you'll see a little bit of toning right off the bottom edge of a page. But the majority of the pages don't have any and it is quite inconspicuous. With the exception of the authors signed inscription no one has written their name or anything else on any page in the book. Nor are there any markings. And I didn't see any creases or dogeared corners. The book is 124 pages long. Then there is a section titled 'Tafeln' (Panels or Plates). There are 20 pages and 20 plates.
