Beschreibung
Large 8vo, pp.[4], iv, [4], 5-16, [2], 17-32, [4], 33-48, [2], 49-61, [3]; with dedication, title-page, 4 part titles (2 signed 'J.J.W.fecit') and 7 tail-pieces executed in ink and watercolour by the author, foreword signed by the author; title slightly dusty, occasional light marks, a little foxing to lower edges; very good in contemporary marbled paper over boards, gilt frame to covers; a little wear to spine, corners and edges; with dedication inscription addressed to the Reverend J.B.Noordink.Very rare collection of songs by the Dutch notary and poet Wapperom (1763 1822), one of only a small number of copies produced, decorated by the author himself and distributed among his friends and family. The volume opens with introductory verses by the noted Dutch female poet Maria Petronella Woesthoven (1760 1830). The twenty-two compositions by Wapperom cover themes including poetry, birdsong, time, friendship, peace, nature, the arts and sciences, courage, creation, joy, the New Year, and loneliness. An index at the end indicates the tunes to which the poems should be sung. Wapperom's charming accompanying illustrations feature a variety of musical instruments and scores, cherubs in pastoral settings, hourglasses, scythes, laurel wreathes, altars and censers, and two of the part titles incorporate additional verse in the author's hand. This copy is dedicated to Wapperom's friend Johannes Bernardus Noordink (1756 1840), doctor of theology and a teacher in The Hague. No copies traced in the US; only one copy recorded on Library Hub, at the British Library. Language: Dutch. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers H6179
