Lone Pine is a small town , population less than 2000, in eastern California where Louis Statham, a wealthy engineer, financed annual swiss tournaments from 1971 to 1981. By paying travel plus living expenses he was able to attract GMs from all over the world. In 1981 there were 61 players, 27 of whom were GMs, in a 9 round swiss. Korchnoi (7) won about $15000, ahead of Gligoric (6 1/2) and Sosonko (6 1/2). Previous winners included Larsen (1978) and Gligoric (1972). The series stopped in 1981 when Statham took ill in 1982 and died in 1983. (Davinksy: 118) Condition: Corners bumped, some light pencil check marks next to some of the games. A very good copy of a scarce item in faux dust jacket. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers BOOKS007751
